I need some help and advice people!

Elvis failed his MOT due to the rear passenger side brake producing ‘little or no effort’ with either hydraulic pressure or with the handbrake.

On inspection it seemed that the mechanisms were working but that brake fluid had leaked out and potentially fouled the shoes.
I’ve put a new cylinder and shoes on but the drum seems really tight when getting back onto the stub axle and won’t spin freely - is this something to do with the adjustment mechanism???

I could do with an explanaion of how rear drum adjustment works - i’ve got Elvis’s MOT retest booked for Tuesday and a wife chomping at the bit to get truckin’ ;)

I don’t want to fail again!!!

  3. Didn’t manage to get that pic (had a mare with the mk3 exhaust ;) )

However, I took this pic of the drum before I disassembled everything and put new bits on - I guess you could use that for descriptive purposes

  4. ok! still a good pic to give directions on! you see the only vertical spring is attached to a wedge shape part, thats your adjuster,it needs to be all the way to the top before fitting with new shoe’s.then refit the drum and bearing so its all nice an straight, find a good pointed screwdriver or grind one down as they are always handy, into a piont, with me so far?? now you need to locate exactly where the vertical spring attaches to on the wedge because thats your hole to stick your driver in to. hold the drum steady an lever upwards with the point..you should hear a series of clicks, keep going until the drum is locked solid, then back of very slightly to enable it to be spun again! do it both sides an then after bleeding etc you can operate the brakes an re check they are still nicely adjusted, you should just hear the shoe brushing against the drum when you spin it along with about 3 clicks on your hand brake! presto!jobs a good un!
